Tesla Model S will shift itself into drive or reverse by ‘guessing,’ says Musk
One of the biggest innovations in Tesla’s new interior for the updated Model S and Model X, respectively, is the new, strangely designed steering wheel without a top. But there is also another novelty behind the wheel – the steering wheel gear lever has been removed.
Instead, the car chooses forward or reverse gear itself, reports Electrek, among others. The car will use its sensors to try to determine which gear is needed. For example, if the car sees a garage wall in front of it, the car will shift into reverse as soon as the driver puts his foot on the brake pedal.
However, there is a way to ignore the car’s own guesses. Through software controls on the car’s new, horizontal screen, another gear can be selected. How well this works, in reality, remains to be seen as usual.
