Mercedes Benz warns of fire risk in hundreds of thousands of cars
A leaking water pump can cause fires – owners are advised to “drive carefully”.
In a letter, Mercedes Benz has warned the owners of about 800,000 cars in Europe about a technical problem that could pose a fire risk. It reports the German newspaper Bild on Wednesday.
The newspaper has published a copy of the letter in question, in which the car manufacturer writes that the water pump in some diesel-powered cars may start to leak. They further write that in individual cases this can lead to high temperatures and that the risk of fire “can not be ruled out”.
Mercedes has not yet recalled the cars concerned, as they currently lack the spare parts needed to remedy the problem. Meanwhile, the company urges the owners of the cars concerned to “drive particularly carefully” and “limit the use to a minimum”.
However, Mercedes Benz says in a comment to Bild that they are working on a solution and that the first round of repairs will be carried out in the middle or end of January 2022.
The problem includes models with the OM654 and OM656 diesel engines manufactured between January 2017 and October 2021. This includes the GLC, GLE, GLS, C-, E- and S-Class, CLS and G-Class off-road models.
