Apple and Kia finally reached an agreement to produce electric cars. Rumors say that the two companies will start manufacturing the models in 2024. The initial capacity of the operation would be 100 thousand cars per year and may reach 400 thousand units.
Apple chose to make an agreement with Kia because of the automaker’s plant in Georgia, United States. The Korean company, according to news from the foreign press, will be responsible for producing the cars, called iCar, which will be built on the E-GMP platform. Apple would be responsible for the autonomous driving hardware, battery, user experience and design.
However, an executive at the Hyundai Motor Group told Reuters that this partnership is difficult. He mentioned that Apple is in charge. They develop marketing, brand and products. But Hyundai is in charge too and this would not work.
How will the Apple car look like?
Apple has already said that it works in the chemistry of its next-level batteries with LFP and lithium iron phosphate technology, which is less prone to overheating and therefore safer than conventional systems, in today’s electric cars, from lithium-ion.
In short, according to recent reports, iCar could appear as a concept later this year. Specialized media in the United States, however, guarantee that it will only happen in 2027.
Reports ensure that Apple’s Self-Driving Project is in a very early stage of development.
On the other hand, there are reports that suggest that Apple has focused on new battery technology for the iCar. This technology, called monocell, promises to integrate each of the battery cells, which will free up space and allow a more active material in a smaller size.
